What does cancer of the lips look like?
Lip cancer often looks like a mouth sore that won’t heal. In people with light skin, this sore may appear reddish. In people with darker skin, it may appear dark brown or gray. Lip cancer can look different for everyone, so if you notice something strange, you should call your healthcare provider for an appointment.
How do you know you have lip cancer?
Signs and symptoms of lip cancer include:
- A flat or slightly raised whitish discoloration of the lip.
- A sore on your lip that won’t heal.
- Tingling, pain or numbness of the lips or the skin around the mouth.
Is lip cancer visible?
Lip melanoma typically affects the surface cells of the skin. Common signs or symptoms of lip cancer include visible irregularities in the skin on the lower lip. According to the American Cancer Society, a red patch on your lip that becomes crusty, itchy, or bleeds is a warning sign.
Does lip cancer spread?
In this stage of cancer, the original lip tumor may be any size but has either spread into other nearby tissues (such as the jaw), has spread into multiple lymph nodes on the same side of the neck, has spread into any lymph node on the opposite side of the neck, or has spread into other organs in the body.
How do they remove lip cancer?
Surgery. Surgery is used to remove the lip cancer and a margin of healthy tissue that surrounds it. The surgeon then repairs the lip to allow for normal eating, drinking and speaking. Techniques to reduce scarring also are used.
