Two years later, in 1996, Staley made Nicol Bolas the leader of his own personal Highlander deck, and with that, a new format was born. He named it Elder Dragon Highlander. Fans would later shorten it to EDH. In Staley’s EDH format, there were only five possible decks of cards — one for each of the Elder Dragons.
