What is FGASA qualification?
FGASA is a CATHSSETA accredited training provider for tourism guiding in South Africa. The equivalent CATHSSETA qualifications can be attained through FGASA, thus allowing you to attain the required National Skills Program Certificates and Qualifications.
How many FGASA levels are there?
The FGASA syllabus is split into 17 separate modules that are all covered in the theory exam ranging from mammals, birds and reptiles to some of the less well-known (but vitally important!) topic such as weather and climate, astronomy and geology.
How long does it take to become a field guide?
These qualifications are generally three years long and consist of two years of theory and one year of practical work. There are also other short course options out there, so be sure to do some research before choosing the best option for you!

Entry level guides can expect salaries between R4,000.00 – R7,000.00 a month. This is all dependant on what lodge you will work for, the size, the star grading, the rates, the area and the occupancy. You will also have the opportunity to earn tips.
