The Ryman Auditorium was originally a church. Now known as the Mother Church of Country Music, the Ryman was founded in 1890 and was then known as the Union Gospel Tabernacle. Captain Thomas Ryman, a riverboat captain who also owned a few saloons in Nashville, was inspired by preacher Sam Jones to open the church.
