What are metric tap sizes?
Metric Coarse Sizes
Tap Size | Drill Size |
---|---|
8 x 1.25 | 6.8 |
9 x 1.25 | 7.8 |
10 x 1.5 | 8.5 |
11 x 1.5 | 9.5 |
How do you determine tap drill size?
Tap-drill diameter equals nominal diameter minus thread pitch. For example, drill size for a 3/8-16 thread is 0.375 0.0625 (pitch) = 0.312 in. in diameter, and for a 10-32 thread, the drill diameter is 0.190 0.032 = 0.159 in. (a #21 drill).
How do you read a metric tap size?
- Diameter: the larger the number, the larger the fastener.
- Pitch: the larger the number, the more coarse the thread (the fewer the threads per unit of measure); coarse is the most common metric thread and is assumed when pitch isn’t specified.
- Length: the larger the number, the longer the fastener.
What is the drill size for M10 tap?
Tap Size
Tap Size | Drill Size |
---|---|
M10 x 1 | 9.1mm |
M10 x 1.25 | 8.9mm |
M10 x 1.5 | 8.4mm |
M11 x 1.50 | 9.7mm |
Is M10 a 10mm?
If the size is M10 x 25, that would mean that the diameter is 10 mm. The 25 indicated a length of 25 mm. A matching nut would be labeled M10, which also doesn’t require a thread pitch since it’s a course thread fastener.
Why tap drill sizes are calculated?
In both ISO and UN thread series, having a range of useful drill sizes allows designers and machinists to tailor effective thread depth for long holes, various materials and thread strength requirements. It also allows for the combining of inch and metric taps and drills where convenient to do so.
What is the drill size for a 5/16 18 tap?
17/64″
To Tap This Size Screw Or Bolt: | Use This Drill Bit: | (Closest Fractional:) |
---|---|---|
5/16-18 NC | Ltr.F | 17/64″ |
8mm-1.25mm | 6.9mm | 17/64″ |
5/16-24 NF | Ltr.I | – |
8mm-1.00mm | 7.1mm | – |
What is a metric tap?
Thread size is the number of Threads Per Inch (TPI) which is measured along the length of the tap. Metric sizes are referred to as thread pitch. Both the chamfered portion of the tap and the first full thread beyond the chamfer produce the finished thread of the part.
What size is 10mm drill bit?
Metric Tap and Drill Bit Size Table
Tap | Metric Drill | US Drill |
---|---|---|
10mm x 1.25 | 8.9mm | 11/32″ |
10mm x 1.0 | 9.1mm | – |
12mm x 1.75 | 10.5mm | – |
12mm x 1.5 | 10.7mm | 27/64″ |
What is tap size?
A tap removes material from a pre-drilled or punched hole. The result of this cutting action produces threads within the drilled hole. Thread size is the number of Threads Per Inch (TPI) which is measured along the length of the tap. Metric sizes are referred to as thread pitch.
