How much does Dilapan dilate the cervix?
Dilapan-S® is a slim rod made of a synthetic firm gel. Usually 3 – 5 rods are gently inserted together into the cervix and absorb the fluid from the surrounding tissue. Each thin rod will gently expand up to 14 mm over 12 hours. When the rods grow, they dilate and soften the cervix to help prepare you for labour.

How do you insert a Dilapan?
Use sponge forceps to grasp the handle of the Dilapan-S rod and insert the rod through the external cervical os gradually and without undue force. It is important that the rod traverses the internal os. Do not insert Dilapan-S rod past the handle. The border of the collar should rest at the external os.
Can you feel Dilapan?
The Dilapan-S® dilators will carefully be inserted into your cervix. The procedure can be temporarily uncomfortable, but it is generally well tolerated by most women. Because the dilators expand very gradually, they are gentle on your cervix and most women feel comfortable overall during the cervical ripening period.
Can Dilapan fall out?
Won’t the DILAPAN-S® rod fall out if the patient stands? The issue is reported very rarely and is usually connected with spontaneous onset of the labour or with incorrect insertion of the device, when the end of active part of the rod did not pass the internal os.
Can Dilapan rods fall out?
Removal should be within 24 hours of insertion. DO NOT attempt to remove the rods by yourself under any circumstances. Dilapan-S® rods falling out, spontaneous rupture of membranes (known as your “water breaking”), or onset of labor should be reported to your healthcare provider.
Is Dilapan effective?
Dilapan-S has a 90% success rate and contains no medicine or active substances that would be released during its application. This results in very low incidence of hyper stimulation (over activity of the womb), uterine rupture and fetal distress.
How long can Dilapan stay in?

If your cervix is ‘unfavourable’, up to five rods of Dilapan-S can be inserted in the cervical canal. The rods will stay there for approximately 12-16 hours but the process can continue up to 24 hours to expand and ripen your cervix before you are reassessed for suitability to break your waters.
