Can you visit Calshot Castle?
Opening times For 2021, Calshot Castle will open on weekends and school holiday weekdays only. For a full list of opening dates, please visit the English Heritage webpage. Open 10.30am to 4.30pm. Lunchtime closure from 1pm to 1.30pm and last admission at 4pm.
Why was Calshot Castle built?
Calshot Castle was built to protect the prosperous port of Southampton as part of Henry VIII’s large scale coastal defence programme. The site was later re-armed in the late nineteenth century in response to the new Motor Torpedo Boat threat and soon after became a major seaplane base for the Royal Navy.
Is Calshot Castle dog friendly?

Can you swim at Calshot beach?
Calshot Beach is a popular place for wild swimmers, as is Lepe Country Park. Both have both been rated ‘excellent’ for water quality. The shingle beaches at Milford-on-Sea, Barton-on-Sea and Highcliffe have too. There are lots of opportunities for wild swimming in the New Forest.

Calshot beach forms part of a mile long shingle spit which reaches out into the mouth of Southampton Water. From here you get a great view of the ships coming and going from one of the UK’s largest ports.
Does Calshot beach have toilets?
PUBLIC toilets at Barton and Calshot are set to stay open for now after a controversial plan to keep them closed was flushed away. As reported in the A there was an outcry when it emerged NFDC were considering keeping the toilets closed when the lockdown eventually lifts. Both are more than 10 years old.
